Preparation for Confirmation in the Diocese or Rochester is a two-year catechetical process that begins in the 8th grade. The process challenges every part of the candidates to grow. They will learn (head), experience (heart), and serve (hands).
The goal of Confirmation Preparation is to ground candidates in the faith and prepare them to live a life of faith, strengthened by the grace of the Sacrament.
In brief, the two-year Confirmation Program at the Parish of the Most Holy Name of Jesus includes these four elements:
25 Hours of Catechesis (Proximate Preparation) each for Year 1 and Year 2 (for a total of 50 catechetical hours over two years). Note: This requirement can be met by Notre Dame High School’s Catholic theology courses.
Service for Year 1 and Year 2 Our format is called FIAT – Faith in Action for Transformation. Five (5) FIATs are required each for Year 1 and Year 2, for a total of ten (10) over two years.
Confirmation Retreat per Year 1 and Year 2. All candidates must attend an approved Confirmation or Diocesan retreat.
Sacramental Preparation (Immediate Preparation) for Year 2 candidates. All candidates must attend the three Immediate Preparation sessions that include a parish ministry fair, vocations presentation, and an interview/conversation with a clergy member about readiness for receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation. Confirmation Sponsors are also included for part of Immediate Preparation.
A home-based or hybrid preparation is possible; please contact us if interested in either of these options.
“The single most important influence on the religious and spiritual lives of adolescents is their parents.” (Christian Smith in Soul Searching). Parents are requested to participate as much as possible in our catechesis, FIATs, retreats and other elements.
If your son or daughter is going into 8th grade, has received First Holy Communion, and was not Confirmed through the Restored Order program at St. Mary’s, please contact our office to receive a registration information packet.
